THE POWER OF 2ND CHANCES: THE KELLYS’ STORY Uncategorized

THE POWER OF 2ND CHANCES: THE KELLYS’ STORY

2nd chances are a gift from God. His 20-year marriage had just ended. Rick didn’t expect to see anything positive from the ordeal. Her 25-year marriage also ended in divorce. Jan's expectations of the future were few in number and a "happily-ever-after" wasn't one of them. Jan jokes that the end of her marriage was her fault. “I couldn’t get along with my husband’s girlfriend – even though she was my best friend!” Rick was worried about the legal costs and shared custody of his young daughter. He hit rock bottom. A GODWINK When a friend shared that there’s hope through faith in Jesus Christ, Rick accepted Jesus into his life and started to attend church. It was no coincidence…

LEARNING TO TALK GOD Uncategorized

LEARNING TO TALK GOD

You’ve got to learn to talk God. Not talk “to” God, but talk God. Talking God Talking God is a bit like Dory learning to “talk whale” in Finding Nemo – the difference is, talking God works. God has a language all His own. The same words are used in talking God as are used in English or French or Italian but they have a different meaning. For instance, God told Adam and Eve that if they ate the fruit of the Tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil they would die. They ate the fruit but they didn’t die. But they did die. Jesus came, he said, to set up His kingdom. His disciples understood he meant overthrowing…

THE FREEDOM OF COMMITMENT Uncategorized

THE FREEDOM OF COMMITMENT

Commitment will set you free. Sounds counter-intuitive? If it does you’re not alone. In fact, at one time I thought of commitment as the antithesis of freedom. FREEDOM Now, when I think about my life I see the commitments I’ve made actually freed me to become the person I am today. I realize that I couldn’t have followed through on the really hard things I’ve done without commitment. There would be no University degree in Mathematics or a graduation from Bible College. I couldn’t have gotten married and certainly not become a parent. I couldn’t have become a pastor. And there is no way under heaven’s blue sky that I could have helped relocate Central Tabernacle to where North Pointe…

ANDY STANLEY ON SELF-LEADERSHIP: FIRE THE LIAR Uncategorized

ANDY STANLEY ON SELF-LEADERSHIP: FIRE THE LIAR

Andy Stanley hits the bullseye every time I hear him. His talk on self-leadership at Leadercast 2018 hit a little too close to home for me. But that's OK because every good leadership talk should start with "ouch" and end with "thank you." He suggests that you should "fire the liar" and he's referring to no one else except... 26 Thoughts On Self-Leadership 1. The easiest person for me to deceive is the person in the mirror. You are a sucker for you. 2. You can’t lead yourself well as long as you’re lying to yourself. You can’t lead a liar.  Fire the liar. 3. I have participated in every bad decision I’ve ever made. 4. You have participated in…

A TASTE OF NORTH POINTE: INTERNATIONAL SUNDAY Uncategorized

A TASTE OF NORTH POINTE: INTERNATIONAL SUNDAY

The loving touch of Gale Angus was all over International Sunday at North Pointe. Not only was she the inspiration behind the day, to a large degree North Pointe is what it is today because of Gale. Gale Angus' Legacy When North Pointe opened its doors on July 16, 2006 we were more plain vanilla than multi-culturally hued. While not exclusively a White Anglo Saxon Protestant congregation, we were pretty close. Gale Angus North Pointe was just fourteen months old when Gale Angus came on campus for her first Sunday experience. And she came back to stay. Gale did more than just attend; she got involved in serving at North Pointe and especially in the Children's programs. She was compassionate,…

EIGHT-YEAR OLD’S BUCKET LIST: JANAYA CHEKOWSKI Uncategorized

EIGHT-YEAR OLD’S BUCKET LIST: JANAYA CHEKOWSKI

How on earth can you make sense of an eight-year old needing a bucket list? Buckets are for kids to fill with sand and make sandcastles. And collect Saskatoons, raspberries or ladybugs. Or for carrying water to pour over their sister’s head. Janaya Chekowski-McKenzie, is a bright, spunky, beautiful eight-year old, and an incredible fighter with unlimited potential. However, the list of her medical complications is almost as long as her bucket list. Janaya's Story At birth she was found to be hypoxic due to being in the birth canal too long. And this caused a lung infection. At the age of three months she was diagnosed with a very rare condition called Hypopituitarism - an under-active pituitary gland. Janaya lacks…

THIS IS US: OUR NOW AND OUR FUTURE Uncategorized

THIS IS US: OUR NOW AND OUR FUTURE

What does a Hindu, a 20-something single mom, an agnostic, a Muslim, a couple living together, a young adult facing bulimia, an ex-con, and an unconvinced skeptic, share in common? They are the future of the church in Canada. Many of them already make up the church we call North Pointe. This is us - our now and our future. Look at the horizon of Canada’s social landscape. You will see an emerging generation on a spiritual quest. We have an incredible opportunity to be a guide, if invited into their journey. Our Responsibility It's our responsibility to see to it that North Pointe thrives as a gathering of people in process; a place where the curious, the unconvinced, the…

BOSTON MARATHON SURVIVORS AND HUMBOLDT

It’s been a whirlwind five years for survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing. News cycles last nano seconds compared to the recovery from injuries that goes on and one and on. Five years later the courage of these survivors offers hope to players recovering from injuries suffered in the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy, on April 6, 2018. StrazStrong Players like Ryan Straschnitzki, the 18-year-old who suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed, along with broken bones and internal damage. Already Ryan has declared that he will play sledge hockey and aspire to being on the Canadian Olympic team. His trainer, Cody Thompson, came up with “Staz strong” to describe Ryan. “He would come in and do our workout, then when…

30 ANDY STANLEY TAKEAWAYS ON LIFE’S MEANING Uncategorized

30 ANDY STANLEY TAKEAWAYS ON LIFE’S MEANING

It is in you and in me to make a difference and find meaning in life. Purpose is often found at the intersection of a broken heart, opportunity and skill. Andy Stanley's Take On Life 1.  At the end of anyone’s life somebody at their funeral service is going to find something to say about their life that is meaningful and had purpose. 2. I have never met someone who said, “Andy, I have been doing something meaningful my entire life and I’m sick of it.” 3. Nobody wants to be “the reason.” They want to be “the something.” Purpose 4. Purpose is a means to an end. 5. Purpose is costly. 6. Most of us want to be the…

LETTING GO: SHAUNA’S STORY Uncategorized

LETTING GO: SHAUNA’S STORY

You can only hang on by yourself for so long. Letting go can become a surprising path to freedom. Many years back my sister was trying out hang gliding in Mexico. After some impromptu instructions the boat towing the glider took her out over the ocean. When she came back she told us she had hung on as long as she could thinking that letting go would land her in the water. When her strength faded so did her choices. She let go and stayed in the air. Shauna Ncube is from North Cooking Lake, Alberta and spent time in Nara, Nara Japan. She is a wife to Nigel, mom to Keenan and Ian and a friend to many. In…
