Add chaplains to the list of first responders: the emergency dispatchers that take the panicked calls, firemen, paramedics, ambulance drivers, RCMP officers, STARS - the men and women that arrive in the middle of moans, acrid smoke, spilled diesel and burning tires to do their jobs with no fanfare or recognition other than the satisfaction of a job well done.
The words are a lifeline for surviving Humboldt Bronco players and their families in the wake of the April 6, 2018 bus tragedy. "Always have hope and BELIEVE that everything is possible."
There are going to be very painful moments in your life that will rock your entire world in a matter of minutes. These moments will change you. Cry. Scream if you have to. But let them make you stronger, smarter and kinder. And lean into faith for a miracle.
The queue had stretched out of the Bosnian bakery and onto the street. Starving, war-shattered survivors were lining up for their daily bread. It was 4pm, May 27th, 1992 – one month into the siege of Sarajevo. Suddenly a mortar shell fell directly into the middle of the bread line, obliterating 22 lives.
Traveling south, I encountered a funeral procession heading north. Our local “greatest hits” FM station was playing on my car radio. Ironically, the song playing on the radio was Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life.” Reality interfaced with entertainment.
