I’M A MOM AND CANCER WON’T CHANGE THAT

The thing is, being a mom doesn’t stop for anything. Not for blizzards, not for late nights, and not for cancer. It was July 2017, and I had just gone through another round of CT scans. Checking my voicemail, I heard the familiar voice of my oncologist. “Hi, Julie,” she says in her quiet, steady voice. “I have your lab results back and I’d like to discuss them with you.”

SILVER LININGS: VANESSA GLEW’S STORY

On April 8th, 2013, I heard the words you never want to hear, "You have cancer." My life was never the same from that day on. Fortunately for me the mass in my sigmoid colon was operable. They found what was causing my grief and it was going to be removed.  This was my FIRST Silver Linings moment. What's A Silver Linings Moment? The easiest way to explain a Silver Linings is when people are put into difficult situations, they need to look past the hardships and find the light at the end of the tunnel. Its about turning their negative situations into positive ones, finding their inner peace and the "will power" to overcome anything. When handed lemons, make lemonade!…

NORTH POINTE STRONG

Preparing for round 3. It's not exactly what I had planned for Christmas this year. The timing of my "bad" days will put me right on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. With all that has been going on we weren't able to host our annual events or have the house filled with family and friends on a rotating basis. It's been a bit hard knowing that my favorite season has been and continues to be tainted by all this. Angela Hawrylak is a fighter. She is battling cancer - the fight of a lifetime. This is her second bout. In 2013 she was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Follicular Lymphoma - stage 3. Angela possesses a resolute courage that is helping…

7 THINGS KIDS DO TO CHANGE THE WORLD Uncategorized

7 THINGS KIDS DO TO CHANGE THE WORLD

"What can kids do? They're too young to make a difference." Don't tell that to Sydney Woodworth and her crew at "The Lemonade Stand." While none of them are old enough to get their beginner driver's license they all have enough drive to move mountains. Plus, they've been changing the world for nine summers now. Sydney was awarded "Superstar" status in July 2016 for organizing the TOP FUNDRAISING GROUP for the Stollery. Jesus said, "Whoever becomes as a humble as a child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Faith is not childish, its child-like and its what moves mountains. Adults can learn important lessons from kids and what they are doing. 7 Things Kids Do To Change the…

GRACE OF MANY COLORS: HEATHER’S STORY

When I first held Heather Enright's book in my hands I knew I was touching a rare treasure.  Grace of Many Colors isn't your typical coloring book. Before even one crayon touches a page of this book it gives off a colorful hue of hope. My friend, Colleen passed the book on to me. She heard Heather's inspiring story about creating her book. "It was scary, thrilling, surreal and inspiring to produce this book. It was a labor of love to redeem back everything that cancer had stolen from me. I'm using it to help anyone battling cancer - for every book purchased I'll give one away to a cancer patient." At first, Colleen couldn’t think of any friends with…

THE FIGHT OF YOUR LIFE: COACH PAGANO’S STORY

Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia Sept. 26, 2012, just days after his third game as a first-year head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. He was immediately admitted to hospital for treatment. The Colts, 1-2 at the time and coming off a 2-14 season, returned to Lucas Oil Stadium to play the powerhouse Packers from Green Bay in their next game. Coach On The Sidelines Pagano watched the game from an Indianapolis hospital room. I watched the game as well and saw wide receiver, Reggie Wayne, carry the team and his coach, on his back. Wayne violated the NFL's strict uniform policy by wearing orange gloves and an orange mouthpiece (the color signifying leukemia awareness). He led the Colts in…

I MADE CAKE Uncategorized

I MADE CAKE

I made cake. It's just a store-bought box of cake-mix that I whipped up with some eggs and oil. I don't normally make store-bought cake, and in fact, the last cake I made was for my husband Tim's birthday about 3 years ago. With all the discussion about healthy food and trimming the extras, I don't bake too often. This is sad really, because I enjoy baking. I enjoy that sweet reward at the end of a meal. I used the word 'reward', did you catch that? Some would say sugar is not a reward. No. In fact, some may be poised at the keyboard looking to Google information here to "help me" avoid the hazards of sugar. Don't. Guest…

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS: 11 REALITIES OF LOVE AND LOSS

“The Fault in Our Stars” is a widely popular young adult novel by John Green about teens finding love in a time of cancer. “This is truth - sorry!” says Hazel Grace at the outset of the story. Hazel is the 16 year-old central character and her warning sets the stage for the anticipation of heartbreak. She has managed to hold lung cancer at bay thanks to an experimental drug, but breathing tubes and a portable oxygen tank remind us of cancer’s constant threat. Hazel's Hero With Feet Of Clay Hazel is sent by her anxious and caring parents to a cheesy, church sponsored, cancer support group where she meets the love of her life. (How come church sponsored support…
