NOW ITS PERSONAL: PROSTATE CANCER Uncategorized

NOW ITS PERSONAL: PROSTATE CANCER

“Pastor Bob, you look horrible.” At first I didn't like my mustache either. But then, it grew on me. Doing Good A friend told me, “If I grew a mustache, my wife wouldn’t kiss me for a month. How do you get away with that?” My unfiltered response was, “What makes you think I’m getting away with it?” I grew a stache not so I could look good, but so I could do good. You know. MOvember. Now, three weeks into MOvember and suddenly the cause is personal. Sobering Stats There are too many men and the wives and kids who love them, going through horrible times because of cancer. A close friend was diagnosed with testicular cancer two decades…

THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT: CHRIS HADFIELD Uncategorized

THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT: CHRIS HADFIELD

Col. Chris Hadfield is out of this world. To be correct - WAS - out of this world. He's made two flights on the Space Shuttle, and commanded the International Space Station, but it was Hadfield's zero-gravity rendition of David Bowie's Space Oddity and his breathtaking photographs that earned him superstar status. How great is it that eight hundred grade six students heard tales from outer and inner space from a real live Rocket Man at North Pointe. Commander Coach In his pre-talk walk-through, the Commander quickly let it be known that he's a detail guy. Audio and video techs, and even a school board representative, were coached on his precise expectations. Behind the scenes he graciously posed for pictures…

ALBERTA’S CANNABIS REALITY: IT’S THE ECONOMY STUPID Uncategorized

ALBERTA’S CANNABIS REALITY: IT’S THE ECONOMY STUPID

In a province where billionaires made it big gambling on petroleum, Aurora Cannabis is betting on a new kind of oil in Alberta. Recreational cannabis sales go legal in the land of the maple leaf on October 17th and Aurora has the munchies for market share. Recreational? Aurora isn't blowing smoke in boasting a market cap of about $4.3 billion. It will be on the forefront of a new technology to extract cannabis oil at an industrial scale. Along with a second site in Medicine Hat, the company is set to produce 200,000 kilos of marijuana per year. The Budweiser of weed - that's Aurora's aspirations as the leading provider of marijuana in the world. Are we about to smell…

37 REVOLUTIONARY THOUGHTS FROM A DIGITAL APOSTATE Uncategorized

37 REVOLUTIONARY THOUGHTS FROM A DIGITAL APOSTATE

(Photo by James Leynse/Corbis via Getty Images) All healing begins with gratitude. That's a fine thought for a Thanksgiving Monday or any day for that matter. Jeff Einstein has a lot of similar thoughts. And he's on a mission to to confront arrogance and dogma and put God first so you can last. Digital Apostate In the early 80's Einstein was a bona fide media pioneer - referred to by The New York Times as "the Mick Jagger of the digital world." Early in the 21st century, however, and well before the rise of social media, Youtube and smartphones, Einstein morphed from digital media pioneer to Digital Apostate. He asserted that addiction to all things media and all things digital had already…

BRITTNEY’S STORY: LEUKEMIA, LOVE AND A 100KM RUN Uncategorized

BRITTNEY’S STORY: LEUKEMIA, LOVE AND A 100KM RUN

Brittney Tancowny's life changed the day she was told she had leukemia. The very sound was like a death knell. Newly married...an aspiring career...dreams of a family. What happened to her "happily ever after?" Brittney says, "My story involves leukemia but its really about how God has been doing his work in my life and my family and friends’ lives. GOD'S LOVE AND PROMISES The cancer took over so quickly that the 2nd day into my chemo my body began to shut down. The cancer was on full attack and determined to take my life. I was put into a temporary paralysis. I spent 6 months in and out of the hospital with 4 bone marrow biopsies, 4 rounds of…

IN THE TRENCHES WITH JACOB RUBY Uncategorized

IN THE TRENCHES WITH JACOB RUBY

He’ll squeeze all 315 pounds of his 6’7” body into a seat on the bus early Monday morning after a breakfast of five eggs, turkey bacon and yogurt. For Jacob Ruby the three-hour bus ride down the QE II will be reminiscent of high school football away games - the boys on the bus – all good. And then it's all business. Labor Day Classics Labor Day weekend football games are most every Canadian’s favorite farewell to summer. The Banjo Bowl in Regina, the Ti-Cats against the Argos in Hamilton, the Esks taking on the Stamps in Cowtown and even a new rivalry between Montreal and Ottawa. Classics. Jacob (never Jake) and I recently shared football stories over coffee at…

THE SURPRISING WAY OF ABUNDANCE: ANN VOSKAMP Uncategorized

THE SURPRISING WAY OF ABUNDANCE: ANN VOSKAMP

Have you seen nights that it feels like you could grab the Big Dipper and ladle up Light? Nights when you feel bathed in abundant light? Have you sat on the edge of a porch at the edge of all the things that have gone wrong in a day and watched the courage of the stars, blazing brave in the dark? The Way Of Abundance Welcome to Ann Voskamp’s world and the surprising way of abundance. My first reading of Ann’s book, The Way Of Abundance left me disappointed. I had high expectations because of Ann’s previous gems. On second reading I realized it wasn’t Ann that disappointed, but my hurried reading pace. You cannot gobble, gulp and go with…

PRAYER MINUTE FOR JORDAN GAGNON Uncategorized

PRAYER MINUTE FOR JORDAN GAGNON

Beautifully peaceful, loving, happy, and easy going, these are all words I would use to describe my daughter Jordan Gagnon. But here are some other less liked words, Terminal, GMO, patient #7, GAN. Those words I wish we could forget. Jordan was diagnosed over three years ago with Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN). This currently is a terminal genetic condition that effects the nervous system, slowly cutting of every nerve in the body. On August 2nd Christa messaged, "Hey Pastor Bob, have you ever heard of a prayer minute done on social media? I had this thought yesterday that I could orchestrate a specific day and time for those that were interested they could pray for Jordan and our miracle. Has…

HOW THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE SAVED MINE: MICHAEL PHELPS Uncategorized

HOW THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE SAVED MINE: MICHAEL PHELPS

Michael Phelps had been turned into a flat-screen American athletic dream: A skinny boy with big feet (and ears) had been transformed by endless laps and a wise coach into a red-white-and-blue, gold-medal-winning machine. Michael Phelps The most decorated Olympian ever, Phelps entered the 2016 Rio Olympics with twenty-two medals, including eighteen gold to his credit. Originally, he retired after the 2012 London Olympics. But the competition bug got him in 2014. He attempted a comeback. On a late night drive home after a hard day of training he was pulled over by the police and arrested for driving under the influence. His September 2014 arrest was his second DUI. When his parents received the phone call from the police…

KKK LEADER RENOUNCES MEMBERSHIP: EMPATHY POWER

What would it take for an elite leader of the Ku Klux Klan to tear up his membership card? Claiborne Ellis was born into a poor white family in Durham, North Carolina, in 1927. Finding it hard to make ends meet working in a garage and believing African Americans were the cause of all his troubles, he followed his father’s footsteps and joined the Ku Klux Klan, eventually rising to the top position of Exalted Cyclops of his local KKK branch. Exploding Prejudices In 1971 Claiborne was invited to a 10-day community meeting to tackle racial tensions in schools, and was chosen to head a steering committee with Ann Atwater, a black activist he despised. But working with her exploded…
