LIVING LANDSCAPES: REJOICE, PRAY, GRATITUDE

Many of the following thoughts may seem strange, maybe unrealistic to apply. The more I look into it, the more I see quite the opposite. These things are actually the very best tools to take you through life in the most amazing way, no matter what the circumstances. "I have spent a lot of time wondering what God’s will for my life is. Am I using my time here on earth the way that He had planned for me? Is the work that I do in line with His will or is it leading to something more, something maybe more spiritual, more purposeful, eternal type work." Thanks to Jim Kapteyn for this guest post. His wife, Kathy is facing the…

CHRISTINA GRIMMIE / BOB DIXON / FOREVER

He loved music. She was a singer. He listened to YouTube. She went viral on YouTube. His music made him feel happy. Her music made others happy. They were generations apart and lived in two different countries but they are now sharing heaven together. Christina, Bob and Eternity I was numbed by both of their deaths. Christina Grimmie was 23 years young when her life was taken by a murderer's bullets. She was gunned down while signing autographs after her Orlando concert on June 10th. Grimmie was a rising star made famous by her exceptional vocal talent and her genuine love for her raving fans. I learned about her murder from a distance and was deeply saddened by her senseless…

EXTREME DREAM COME TRUE: THANKS, MIKE LOVE!

The most profound moments of YC 2016 were the opening minutes of Friday night. Mike Love - "Mr YC" for twenty two years - welcomed all to Rexall Place - the former home of the Oilers, now "YC Country." The crowd, in excess of 10,000 under 30's, punctuated the moment with an approving roar - louder than Connor McDavid's heard in this hockey barn. Then it happened. Mike asked everyone to join him in prayer. At his first words, the place quieted down and then fell silent. Hear "a-pin-drop-kind" of silent. Quieter than a church. It was deafening and sacred.   2016's Theme: UN1TE. For over two decades Extreme Dream Ministries led by Mike Love and his dedicated team of volunteers…

WHEN A CHILD SUFFERS: A MOM’S HEART

Christa Gagnon is the proud mom of two handsome boys and one precious little girl. When all of her friends in high school were discussing which programs they were going to take in University and what they wanted to be when they “grew up” she can remember thinking that her one and only desire in life was to be a mom. Being A Mom Being a mom was the best career choice she ever made. “I will never forget the first amazing months with my first child. Looking at him and thinking that I had no idea the heart could feel that amount of love for one human being. To my surprise it was the same when Jordan was born…

THE EASTER PLAY

It was a rehearsal for the Easter play. The youth group had been practicing for months. My son had been to all of the practices. As a dutiful mom, I had dropped him off at the church and picked him up again at the end of each practice. As a typical mom, I usually waited out in the car for practice to end and my son to emerge. As a curious mom, however, this last practice was different. Sneaking In To The Last Practice Instead of waiting alone I ventured into the church to see if I could catch a sneak peak of what the upcoming play was about (my son had offered very few clues in the weeks prior).…

7 WOMEN AND THE SECRET OF THEIR GREATNESS

“7 Women And The Secret Of Their Greatness” is the latest Eric Metaxas page turner. He highlights the stories of Joan of Arc, Suzanna Wesley, Hannah More, Maria Skobtsova, Corrie ten Boom, Mother Teresa, and Rosa Parks. Metaxas is a master writer of biographies. I can readily enjoy a pleasant weekend wrapped up in stories well told. My personal library is stocked with biographies of accomplished athletes, Civil War generals, politicians, missionaries, innovators and entrepreneurs. Metaxas says “biographies enable us to slip the strictures of time and provide a bracing corrective to our tendency to see everything in the dark glass of our own era, with all its blind spots, mores, beams and distortions.” Biographies I’d never heard of Hannah…

REVITALIZATION AND MULTIPLICATION

The illuminated face of the clock by the bed read, “3:38.” Conscious. Confused. Clear. Awake! O yah, its Thursday and I’m supposed to jet to Vancouver. Belt buckled. Keys in pockets. Shoes on. Groomed! No time for brewing coffee. Grrrrr. Notes? Check. iPhone ticket? Check. Car rental? Check. Ready! Cold and snow blankets everything, delaying but invigorating. Sparse traffic. Silent morning. Slushy roads. Departures! The ripples of 9/11 are reminders that tighter security doesn’t make life feel more secure. Belt off. Pockets emptied. Shoes off. Inconvenienced! The best part of flying. Not. 32,000 feet. 548km/hr -64C Purpose! The planeload empties at almost the identical local time we departed. Rain for snow. Green for white. Mountains for plains. Envious! A rented…

FEARLESS IN BURUNDI: THE KOMANTS’ STORY

Look at their smiles. They appear to be a typical, retired Canadian couple holidaying in some exotic, faraway place. The Komants are anything but typical and certainly not retired. Elmer and Sherry Komant are North Pointe's partner missionaries serving in Bujumbura, Burundi. They know what it is to be fearless. Consider their description of neighborhood gunfire as "pressure cooker popcorn." They've faced hostile governments, financial challenges, strange foreign customs, and Elmer's diagnosis of inoperable brain cancer, thirty years ago. Seniors Strong The Komants successfully planted churches in Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi. They are in their 60's and still going strong. At an age when most Canadians are retiring the Komants ramped up their commitment to serve. In 2014 they…

4 FACTS ABOUT FAITH AND FEAR

Fear knocks at everybody's door. Phobia comes in a plethora of forms - fear of failure, falling, fire, flowers, flying, frogs, or fog to name a few. How will faith help you face fear? 4 Facts About Faith And Fear 1. If  you give in to fear, it will rule your life. Fear tears away ambition, kind actions or thoughts. It creates resentments, jealousy and anger. Fear will make you doubt life, your friends and the best intentions of others. It can change how you feel and react to things which would not normally bother you. 2. Faith changes everything. A Bible verse, a devotional thought, a memory of past success, an email from a friend, a kind word, good…

GOOD NEWS GIRL ON CTV

Faith, joy and hope are timeless qualities that will help you be your best even when life is at its worst. For Kristen Fersovitch they were a trilogy of tested and trusted convictions. When Kristen was diagnosed with inoperable cancer in 2011, she had no idea her story would inspire thousands of people across Canada. She has appeared in national magazines, newspapers, blogs and published in a hardcover book. In December 2015, CTV Edmonton ran a prime time feature on her life of music, family, marriage, parenting, and hope. Thank you, Dez Melenka at CTV for so beautifully telling Kristen's story.
