WHEN EVIL STRIKES

Inside Commonwealth Stadium the Edmonton Eskimos football team were racking up their sixth straight loss of the season. That was bad enough. Outside Commonwealth, one man went on a Saturday night rampage leaving a police officer and four pedestrians injured. An ISIS flag was found in his vehicle. (more…)

ISIS, FORGIVENESS, MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIANS

Twelve seconds of silence is an awkward eternity on television. Amr Adeeb, perhaps the most prominent talk show host in Egypt, leaned forward as he searched for a response. Moments earlier, Adeeb was watching a colleague speak with the widow of Naseem Faheem, the guard killed by a suicide bomber at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria, Egypt on Palm Sunday. Across the Middle East and around the world Muslims and Christians are observing in reverent awe an exceptional grace displayed in the face of evil. ISIS, COMRADERY AND CHRISTMAS: CANADIANS IN EUROPE

The truth of the matter is that we learned a lot more than we ever expected by living in Europe. Little did we know when we accepted the posting to Germany that we would spend two years witnessing history in the making. Moving To Europe In 2014 we moved our family to a little village just outside of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany. My husband Anas was posted there with the Canadian military. The American base was a big part of our lives for the two years we were abroad as it felt like home interacting with English speaking people and shopping in a North American environment. However, it was always clear that we were far from home as there…

GOOD NEWS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Welcome to the Middle East. All the news isn't bad. Muslims all over the region are coming to faith in Christ. What’s more, they’re willing to suffer persecution for Jesus in part because they see the redemption of other Muslims and want to be faithful in sharing the good news of Jesus. ISIS and Genocide Terrorists of the Islamic State are enslaving, starving, beheading and crucifying Christians in Syria and Iraq and trying to forcibly convert them to Islam. The number of Christians in Syria has dropped from 1.25 million to 500,000 in recent years, according to analyses by Alliance Defending Freedom. The number of Christians in Iraq has dropped from 1.4 million to fewer than 275,000 in recent years.…

ANSWERING JIHAD: A BETTER WAY

The world outside Canada is a disturbing place right now.  Extremism is taking the high ground on political and religious fronts. There are fears that what is outside is incipiently making its way inside - in particular, the tremors caused by radicalized Muslims from Western countries joining international jihad. How will Canada be affected? Answering Jihad I eagerly anticipated the release in March 2016 of “Answering Jihad: A Better Way Forward” because of Nabeel Qureshi’s Muslim heritage and his intellectual firepower. If anyone could take a highly controversial and complex subject and break it down to its essentials, Quershi was the guy. He doesn’t disappoint, writing with insightful clarity and courage. Qureshi’s frank treatment of Islam, the Quran and the…

A CANADIAN’S VIEW OF REFUGEES: STEVE HERTZOG’S STORY

It’s the children I will always remember. At least two dozen of them. As soon as they saw our little convoy of vehicles turn up the dirt road to the refugee camp, they emerged from the dilapidated tents and abandoned, boarded-up apartment buildings they now called home and ran right for us. Dressed in dirty hand-me-downs, they smiled and giggled and kibitzed with one another as they looked us over with bright, curious eyes, full of life. Good to see kids are still kids - even here - I thought. This is a guest post from Steve Hertzog, past President of Vanguard College and new Regional Director for Eurasia with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. Steve and his wife Patti…

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE: A CANADIAN’S STORY

Freedom is not free. I should not – I must not forget – that peace is won at the cost of precious life. Flanders Fields, not strawberry fields, remind me of that truth. Free nations must do everything to keep the peace. Where peace is threatened by force, it must be met with force. Canada's role as "Peacekeeper" has been a part of our nation's pride. That role has shifted recently to "Peacemakers" - fighting to win the peace in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. The decision to withdraw Canadian combat support against ISIS is now another change in direction. Lonya D’Orsay is a part of the community of believers at North Pointe. Her husband, Dan, is retired military. He served…

Middle East Conflict: The Root

Beshir Kamel lost two brothers who were amongst the twenty-one Christians executed by ISIS terrorists in February 2015. Everyone involved in this horrific event, both the victims and the perpetrators, were of Arab origins. When it comes to the Middle East we presume to know the “good guys” from the “bad guys.” Aren’t all Middle East conflicts the result of an Old Testament prophecy related to the descendants of Ishmael? Aren’t Ishmael’s descendants said to be against everyone? Aren’t the sworn enemies of Israel all Arabs? A recent trip to Israel influenced me to re-examine a number of my conceptions regarding Arab people. APPALLING ATROCITIES AND A REMARKABLE RESPONSE A clearer understanding of the Biblical story of Ishmael, from whom…
