IN THE TRENCHES WITH JACOB RUBY

He’ll squeeze all 315 pounds of his 6’7” body into a seat on the bus early Monday morning after a breakfast of five eggs, turkey bacon and yogurt. For Jacob Ruby the three-hour bus ride down the QE II will be reminiscent of high school football away games - the boys on the bus – all good. And then it's all business. Labor Day Classics Labor Day weekend football games are most every Canadian’s favorite farewell to summer. The Banjo Bowl in Regina, the Ti-Cats against the Argos in Hamilton, the Esks taking on the Stamps in Cowtown and even a new rivalry between Montreal and Ottawa. Classics. OUR SMALL ACTS OF DEFYING FEAR

We went to an Edmonton Eskimo football game and a love fest with the men and women in blue broke out. Green And Gold Two of my granddaughters and I were on a packed Park 'n Ride fan bus. We were enroute to a Saturday nite Esks' game. Nearing the stadium I couldn't help but reflect on the last time the Green and Gold played a home game. THEY CALL ME JFRANKTANK: JAMES FRANKLIN

As a professional football player, James Franklin has learned to avoid getting sacked by 300lb rushing lineman and the crushing weight of unfulfilled dreams. Franklin played his last NCAA college game by winning the 2014 Cotton Bowl in front of a national TV audience and 72,000 fans in Arlington, Texas. He now spends all of his game time for the Edmonton Eskimos on the sidelines signalling in plays to Mike Reilly. His faith, family and focus have kept him in the game. Positive Parents Franklin was born in Edmond, Oklahoma, on July 23, 1991. His father’s ministry work kept them on the move when he was young, taking them to Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Missouri before setting in Corinth, Texas, when…

THE MOST VALUABLE QUALITY IN A MAN

What is the best measure of a man? Is a man a man because of his biceps, triceps or concepts? Is it strength, toughness or kindness that makes a man? Or is something else? Garry Lefebvre: A True Gentle Man One of the toughest and the most gentle man I know is Garry Lefebvre. He served as an elder and a leader of men at North Pointe Church. His wife Sandy, their four children and grand kids knew that best. Garry was a two-time Grey Cup champion. His award-winning CFL career spanned a decade in which he played wide receiver and punter for the Edmonton Eskimos and Montreal Alouettes. Tough? Garry played through a broken ankle, dislocation and shredded ligaments…
