TRUCKIN’, TIM’S AND A GRAMPA NAMED DON

Truckin' was in Don Stoner's blood. So was coffee but that goes with the territory. Don lived in Edmonton. The run to Winnipeg he knew like the back of his hand. For One Hour Just beyond Winnipeg lived his granddaughter, Kylie. In Chelmsford, Ontario. After making a run to Winnipeg, he decided to go and see her. From Winnipeg he drove through Hawk Lake, Nipigon, Dryden, Upsala, Thunder Bay, Terrace Bay, Marathon, Wawa, Sault Ste Marie, Bruce Mines, Thessalon, Blind River, Espanola, Webwood, Sudbury, and then jogged north to Chelmsford. That's one thousand, six hundred and ninety three kilometers - one way. All for one hour. With a granddaughter who was way too young for coffee. At Tim Horton’s. Extravagant…

FROM HATE TO HEALING

Before sitting down with the media to share her incredible journey, from survivor to advocate, silence to speech, she had something else to do. Something that, for eighteen years, had been unthinkable for Brenda Tracy. She snapped a photo with Coach Mike Riley. And she was smiling. Three Haunting Words When I read the words "coach Mike Riley" "rape" and "hate" in the same sentence in a National Post article I couldn't believe it. Riley is a good guy, a good coach. Where was this coming from? Back in 1998, when Tracy was 24, she was gang-raped by four football players. Two of her attackers played for Oregon State University. When the charges were dropped, and the players received nothing more than a one-game…

THE HAPPIEST DOG IN SHERWOOD PARK

Does every encounter you have with another person, every exchange, every chance meeting, every smile, every word spoken in frustration, every sadness shared, does it happen for a reason? A special post from the heart of Adena Lowry, one of the Writers Group at North Pointe. Einstein said, “There are only two ways to live your life: as though nothing is a miracle, or as though everything is a miracle.” A Long Goodbye My dog, Griffin, is sick. I think we’re putting him down next week. I’ve been saying goodbye to him for a few days now, drinking him in, watching him, talking with him, hanging out with him, scratching him behind the ears, unsure of how I’m going to…

DANCING IN THE RAIN: LINDA WINICK

Ask a hundred people who knew Linda Winick and you'll get hundred and one responses of "her smile" as her most impressionable quality. She left an indelible impact on anyone she met. Linda happily went in with all heart to anything she committed herself to - from 4-H as a child, community work as a homemaker and serving in her church during the last seven years of her life. No other earthly commitment mattered as much as her family - and she had a lot of them to love. Family Matters Next to her husband Wilson, her five children and their spouses and the nineteen grandchildren they gave her, were the apple of her eye. And she was a great-grandmother…

KINGSWAY, THE BROOCH AND A CANADIAN WELCOME

It’s Edmonton’s only road without a street, avenue or boulevard - it’s just “Kingsway” and it got its name seventy eight years ago. The Difference A Welcome Makes Canada once had a king. His name was George. George VI to be exact. In 1939 the King and his Queen, Elizabeth, voyaged to Canada with war looming on the horizon. The Royals popularity was at an all time low in Britain. Coming to Canada changed everything. Canadians, from Prime Minister MacKenzie King to the proprietors of a New Brunswick tea house welcomed the Royals with open arms. Their month-long cross country tour in "the New World" garnered them favor with Canadians and a new found respect from the Brits back home.…

THE COUP IS GETTING SPENCER FOO

It’s enough to make an Albertan wear red. This week one of North Pointe’s own took the next step towards fulfilling his hockey dream. On June 27, 2017 Spencer Foo donned a Flames jersey and signed an NHL contract with the Calgary club as a free agent. Hockey Dreams Ten days earlier Spencer talked with me at NP’s Walk Run Ride For Hope about some of his professional hockey options. It’s nice to have options, isn’t it? Foo was wooed (couldn’t resist) by the NHL’s Oilers, Golden Knights and Red Wings. His image was on arena marquees and billboards. Sportsnet’s sage, Elliotte Friedman, was high on Spencer, as was Bob Stauffer, Oiler’s color commentator. Over the month of June, he…

SHALOM AMIDST THE ANGRY MOBS

People are angry. Muslims are angry. Christians are angry. Secularists are angry. Lines are being drawn. Sides are being taken. Hate, fear, aggression, and protests abound. Our World Muslims are angry because they feel targeted and misrepresented as a homogenized mass. Christians are angry because they're fearful in a climate of a frenzied media. Secularists are angry because they just want to be left alone to get on with their life. You don’t have to look very far to find an angry mob. And you don’t have to look too far to find a church in the middle of these angry mobs. Aleem Ali Aleem Ali is a product of multiculturalism and grace. The grandson of an Imam, the son of a…

3 POSITIVE PRACTICES OF DADS AND MENTORS

The most important conversation with my dad was as a University student. Though he never attended University he had a Masters degree in life. He taught me a process for making important choices. As a result I chose to stay in University, learned the value of perseverance, got a degree, discovered my calling and soon there’ll be peace in the Middle East. (OK, it wasn’t that good.) Education By Imitation Dad probably copied the process from someone - maybe his father. But isn't that how all the most valuable lessons are learned? Three choices that make dads and anyone worth imitating. Memories Of Presence 1. Be an experience maker. Becoming a father is about biology. Being a dad is about…
