Paradise

Anomaly Youth Ministries pulled back the curtain on cultural and relational pressures facing youth in 2014 in their production, "Paradise." Written & Created by Jeremy Gifford, Paradise follows the lives of two teenagers, Abbey & Kyle. Abbey is facing a lot of bullying in her school and online. Kyle is feeling the pressure to fit in and join the bullies. Both Abbey & Kyle are trying to find their place in a broken and messed up world. 4 Sound Ways to Improve the Rhythm of Your Life Uncategorized

4 Sound Ways to Improve the Rhythm of Your Life

For those caught up in the busyness of work, family, and church, it often feels like time with God is just another thing on a crowded “to-do’ list. Ken Shigematsu worked for the Sony Corporation in Tokyo, Japan. His intense work schedule led him to explore personal disciplines that could bring order to his life. He discovered those principles on a tour of Ireland's monasteries. The rhythm of life lived by Irish monks freed them to worship God, serve their communities and live healthy. They were busy but blessed. I had the pleasure of meeting Ken recently. His discoveries are summed up in the book, "God in My Everything: How An Ancient Rhythm Helps Busy People." 4 Sound Ways to…

2 NEGLECTED POWERS NEEDED TODAY Uncategorized

2 NEGLECTED POWERS NEEDED TODAY

Two powers affect all of our lives: unchangeable yesterdays and unpredictable tomorrows. Yesterday's History We long to re-create segments of our personal histories, but we are stuck with them. Hurts done to us. Hurts done by us. Tomorrow's Destiny We long to control our destinies, but we cannot bring them under our management. What will become of me? What will become of us? There are two powers available to you and me, too often neglected, that will successfully address these forebodings. Two Neglected Powers Hannah Arendt was a Jew living in France during the Nazi occupation in 1941. She and her husband were interned in a camp awaiting deportation to a concentration camp in Germany. They escaped and made their…

VISITING NORTH POINTE ON A SUNDAY Uncategorized

VISITING NORTH POINTE ON A SUNDAY

Visiting a church for the first time can be an adventure. Its nice to know what to expect, right? You’d love to ask, but you’re not sure who to ask or even if your question sounds silly. 6 Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting North Pointe 1. What should I wear? We are a “come as you are” church. You’ll see all kinds of people and all kinds of styles. Some will wear a suit and tie (men or women). Some will wear a dress (women). Some will wear jeans and t-shirts. You may even see shorts (even if the weather isn’t warm enough – its Edmonton, eh). 2. What will we do? What can I expect? Show up early…

Just Walk Across The Room Uncategorized

Just Walk Across The Room

My wife and I are runners. We’ve completed a 10-miler; a couple of half-marathons and a full marathon. One of the unexpected things I learned to appreciate about running is the "runners culture." The Runners Culture Runners have a culture all their own - language, customs, gear and camaraderie. What I love most about the culture is the runners’ "greeting." When runners encounter runners they ALWAYS acknowledge each other - its one of the rules of running. In passing, they lift a hand to wave, or tip their cap, or offer a “Good morning” or an encouraging, “Keep going!” or the awesome words, “You guys are making it look so easy!” Sometimes its just a smile. Jocelyn and I seldom…

VISITING NORTH POINTE AT EASTER

Visiting a church for the first time can be an adventure, especially at Easter. Its nice to know what to expect, right? You’d love to ask, but you’re not sure who to ask or even if your question sounds silly. 6 Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting North Pointe 1. What should I wear? Some will wear jeans and t-shirts. You may even see shorts (even if the weather isn’t warm enough – its Edmonton, eh). Of all weekends, Easter tends to be a time to…

7 CLOUT KILLERS AND HOW TO DEFEAT THEM Uncategorized

7 CLOUT KILLERS AND HOW TO DEFEAT THEM

I like the word “clout.” Say it out loud. How does it sound? Powerful, right? It instantly conjures up the image of someone who is influential. That's why I like Jenni Catron’s book, “Discover and Unleash Your God-Given Influence.” For the nine years Catron worked in the music business she had a front row seat to the dreamers. It took a crisis of purpose to force her to recognize the shaky foundation upon which she had built all of her own dreams. She had been driven by forces that lulled her into believing she had power that she never had. Catron writes about the fears that can kill clout and the ways in which faith can build a godly kind…

Imagine Walking Where Jesus Walked Uncategorized

Imagine Walking Where Jesus Walked

I grew up watching Hockey Night in Canada. Year after year, I saw Maple Leaf Gardens only on a TV screen. Some Saturday nights I wondered what it would feel like to be AT the game? My wondering was answered in 1972 when my dad and I went to see the 2nd game of the Canada-Russia Summit series at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was incredible to be in the building I had only imagined. The ice surface seemed smaller than I thought it would be, but seeing and smelling the arena and feeling the energy of the crowd was a memory of a lifetime. Imagine being in the places you've read or heard about from the Bible. The Wailing Wall...The…

SEEKING ALLAH, FINDING JESUS Uncategorized

SEEKING ALLAH, FINDING JESUS

"Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus" presents a gripping and deeply personal account of Nabeel Qureshi’s journey to faith in Jesus. Qureshi’s story of family, friends, and faith, intertwined with insights into Islam, helped me understand the Muslim world in new ways and see the powerful ways in which God is meeting seekers today. March 7, 2017 - "My family and I have received the news that I have advanced stomach cancer, and the clinical prognosis is quite grim. Nonetheless, we are going to pursue healing aggressively, both medical and miraculous, relying on God and the fact that He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. In the past few days my spirits have soared and sank…

Noah, Lions, Tigers and Snakes, O My! Revisited

“Noah” is Hollywood’s first Biblical epic in 50 years and its creating controversy of blockbuster proportions. It has already pulled off one Biblical-sized miracle - uniting Jewish, Christian, and Muslim leaders - in opposition to it. REVIEW: I wrote the above before seeing the film. I saw "Noah" on opening night. Unfortunately, that experience is one of my life's regrets. The film has managed to unite most religious and non-religious movie goers in opposition to the movie. I'm not sure which Bible the producers were trying to stay true to, but it wasn't the Bible I read. I am glad that one of THE major events in world history was addressed but sad that a huge opportunity was missed. My…
