Resurrection Road

Easter weekend is a perfect time to experience “the true grace of God.” North Pointe’s church family has been reading, studying, memorizing and being challenged by the Holy Spirit through the New Testament book, 1st Peter. It can feel like a “deep” book to get into. Every paragraph is saturated with layers of theological terms and Old Testament throwbacks. However, its also an inspiring, grace-filled book when you take it at face value. It was written to people whose worlds were being rocked because of their commitment to Jesus of Nazareth. They were persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, and executed just for being Christians. Peter encourages his readers to choose the “resurrection road.” To follow the example of Jesus when he faced…

The Monk and the Merchant Uncategorized

The Monk and the Merchant

The “Monk and the Merchant” is a modern parable written by Terry Felber. In God’s economy, a businessperson’s occupation is holy. It is their ministry. From a “merchant’s” business, “monks” can be supported. Excellent life and financial principles presented: 1. Work hard and God will prosper you. 2. Financial prosperity is connected to soul prosperity. 3. A man must do whatever he can to provide for his family. 4. Trials develop your character, preparing you for increased blessings. 5. Take responsibility for problems that are the result of your own bad decisions. 6. See challenges as stepping stones, not as obstacles. 7. Be meek before God, but bold before men. 8. Loaning money destroys relationships. 9. Live debt free and…

The World is Watching…Are You?

“The world is watching right now and we are incredibly humbled by the reaction to the series. Ultimately The Bible will be seen and felt by billions around the globe.” History Channel’s venture in presenting the Bible has attracted one of the largest audiences in their history. Are you watching? The series has its detractors. Trying to condense 4,300 years of history into a 10-part series is bound to leave a few gaps. Some depictions are intense and violent. However, this is a series that lets God be God. God is seen inspiring faith, directing individuals, and guiding the events of history toward the completion of His work of salvation through Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and Resurrection. I couldn’t count…

Family Day 2013

How did you spend Family Day? The Family Day holiday was first celebrated in Alberta in 1990. Way to go Alberta! The Premier of the day, Don Getty, said it was important for all Albertans to take time for their families and this holiday would emphasize the importance of family values. Our family spent today apart, in different parts of the country, but we were living out the Jones family values. My wife Jocelyn, was in Nova Scotia (where there is no Family day holiday...yet). She is there for a month caring for her elderly mum who had just had hip replacement surgery. “Going home,” for adult children is always an “interesting experience” because no matter how old you are,…

Open my Eyes Uncategorized

Open my Eyes

Who do you see? Hindsight is perfect. Foresight is profound. 20:20 sight is preferred. Insight is priceless. A person doesn't require natural sight to have supernatural insight. Ask the Lord to, "Open my eyes to see." To see the potential in me, and the possibilities in others around me. John 4:7-26 is the longest recorded conversation that Jesus had with anyone in the New Testament. His interaction is a model for us. Jesus knew his potential - he knew who he was and that made him secure. Insecurity breeds fear and makes us judgmental. When you are secure, God can give you insight into others. Insight frees us to accept others just as they are, without judgment and with understanding.…

FAITH, HOPE AND JOY

"Faith, hope and joy to you." These are the words I write on the dedication page of each copy of the book Ornament. They aren't offered lightly. The words are tested and true. Kristen Fersovitch a thirty-year old wife, and mother of three boys under five, facing inoperable cancer, showed me over and over again how powerful the words are. Even in death they ring true. GREEN BALLOONS AND HOPE Kristen passed away on October 4, 2013 after a two year battle with cancer. The day after Kristen’s funeral I accompanied her body with John Davediuk from Serenity Funeral Services, to Garth Evangelical Cemetery - a small, countryside, cemetery. In preparation for the graveside service three green-coloured, star-shaped balloons had…

2013 One Word

Do you have your One Word for 2013? My word is "Intrepid." It means "resolutely courageous; fearless; daring; bold." It picked me in December during preparation for the our focus at North Pointe. Maybe a word has already risen to the surface for you. Or perhaps as you have prayed you developed a list of possibilities and aren’t sure which to choose. Or maybe you haven’t even begun to think about it yet. Wherever you are in the process, here are some helpful things to consider when choosing your One Word: 1. Focus on being rather than doing. Pray about who the Lord wants you to be, and choose a word that will help you become that. Different than resolutions,…

One Word

Its that time of year for…resolutions. “2013 will be different.” I will (FILL IN THE BLANK) “lose weight; watch less TV; read the Bible more; make more money; waste less time; pray more; be more organized.” Our spirits may be willing but our flesh is mush. What can make a difference? Not more will power, because a lack of will power is not a character flaw. Focus is the key to allowing the Lord to help you become more of the person He wants you to be. What is one word that sums up who you believe the Lord wants you to be or how He wants to live in 2013; one word that you can focus on every day,…

AWAKEN TO WHAT GOD IS UP TO

Where do sunrises fit on your scale of enjoyment? Some of the most searched images in Google are for "sunrise." Are you one of those people who've never seen the sun rise other than in someone else's photos? Like a sunrise to sleepy heads, God's work may only be seen through someone else's experience. Don't miss out...Romans 13:11 alarms, “Be up and AWAKE to what God is doing.” What Is God Up To? 1. He is working on who you are. Your identity plays a pivotal role in how you deal with life. As a Christian, your identity is not based on what has been DONE TO you, but on what Jesus has DONE FOR you. Your past cannot be…
