7 CLOUT KILLERS AND HOW TO DEFEAT THEM Uncategorized

7 CLOUT KILLERS AND HOW TO DEFEAT THEM

I like the word “clout.” Say it out loud. How does it sound? Powerful, right? It instantly conjures up the image of someone who is influential. That's why I like Jenni Catron’s book, “Discover and Unleash Your God-Given Influence.” For the nine years Catron worked in the music business she had a front row seat to the dreamers. It took a crisis of purpose to force her to recognize the shaky foundation upon which she had built all of her own dreams. She had been driven by forces that lulled her into believing she had power that she never had. Catron writes about the fears that can kill clout and the ways in which faith can build a godly kind…

Imagine Walking Where Jesus Walked Uncategorized

Imagine Walking Where Jesus Walked

I grew up watching Hockey Night in Canada. Year after year, I saw Maple Leaf Gardens only on a TV screen. Some Saturday nights I wondered what it would feel like to be AT the game? My wondering was answered in 1972 when my dad and I went to see the 2nd game of the Canada-Russia Summit series at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was incredible to be in the building I had only imagined. The ice surface seemed smaller than I thought it would be, but seeing and smelling the arena and feeling the energy of the crowd was a memory of a lifetime. Imagine being in the places you've read or heard about from the Bible. The Wailing Wall...The…

SEEKING ALLAH, FINDING JESUS Uncategorized

SEEKING ALLAH, FINDING JESUS

"Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus" presents a gripping and deeply personal account of Nabeel Qureshi’s journey to faith in Jesus. Qureshi’s story of family, friends, and faith, intertwined with insights into Islam, helped me understand the Muslim world in new ways and see the powerful ways in which God is meeting seekers today. March 7, 2017 - "My family and I have received the news that I have advanced stomach cancer, and the clinical prognosis is quite grim. Nonetheless, we are going to pursue healing aggressively, both medical and miraculous, relying on God and the fact that He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. In the past few days my spirits have soared and sank…

Noah, Lions, Tigers and Snakes, O My! Revisited Uncategorized

Noah, Lions, Tigers and Snakes, O My! Revisited

“Noah” is Hollywood’s first Biblical epic in 50 years and its creating controversy of blockbuster proportions. It has already pulled off one Biblical-sized miracle - uniting Jewish, Christian, and Muslim leaders - in opposition to it. REVIEW: I wrote the above before seeing the film. I saw "Noah" on opening night. Unfortunately, that experience is one of my life's regrets. The film has managed to unite most religious and non-religious movie goers in opposition to the movie. I'm not sure which Bible the producers were trying to stay true to, but it wasn't the Bible I read. I am glad that one of THE major events in world history was addressed but sad that a huge opportunity was missed. My…

THE IMAGE OF JESUS TODAY Uncategorized

THE IMAGE OF JESUS TODAY

“Ecce Homo” ("Behold the Man") was a prized Spanish fresco — for over a century - the pride of the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in Borja, near Zaragoza. The condition of the painting was gradually deteriorating. Can The Man Be Saved? A concerned, eighty year-old congregant was distraught over its worsening condition. She decided to take matters into her own hands and attempted to restore the painting. What was left looks like a child’s finger painting. Art historians are now discussing if the painting can be saved. The Image of Jesus The story reminds me of well intentioned academics who alter the image of Jesus in an attempt to fit a value system they feel will help people see Jesus…

Why Falling Only Makes Us Stronger Uncategorized

Why Falling Only Makes Us Stronger

Overcoming falls and setbacks enroute to success is the stuff of Olympic champions. Coupling that with the influence of a mom on the journey is the stuff of life. Moms and success is why P & G produced their 2014 Olympic ad, "Thank You Mom." Its already had over 20 million views on YouTube. Each time I've watched the video I can't help but think of how moms have shaped champions through their everyday interactions with their children. In the moment, kids have no way of appreciating the way a mom can allow pain or even bring pain for their greater good. The message makes me think of how God has interacted with my life. (Skip to the video below…

The Secret to Genuine Happiness Uncategorized

The Secret to Genuine Happiness

Hugh Hewitt wrote his legacy book, "The Happiest Life," to bless his children and their children with wisdom for discovering genuine happiness. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hewitt’s anecdotes from his broad experience as a lawyer, teacher, broadcaster and journalist. His connections with the who’s who of Hollywood, pro sports, and politics provide rare insights for what creates genuine happiness. Hewitt’s premise: a happy life involves seven gifts and seven givers. Life's 7 Gifts: 1. Encouragement – Its what you say to a friend or stranger that would “redeem a hard day or make a good one ever better.” 2. Energy – “A player of any game at any time who doesn’t bring his or her energy with them is an…

SAY GOODBYE TO THE BLUES AND LIGHTEN UP

The older we get it seems the less we laugh. On average kids laugh three hundred times a day and adults...five. Have you laughed today? Laughter is like medicine. Doctors call it "inner jogging." He who laughs, lasts. 8 Ways To See The Lighter Side Of Life And Lighten Up 1. Surround yourself with reminders to lighten up. My office is dominated by a serious Coca Cola collection. On my desk is a turtle made out of Coke caps from Burundi, a football-shaped coconut from Hawaii and a praying TY bear named “Hope” given to me by my Daddy/Daughter Ball dance partner, Robynn. 2. Take yourself less seriously. I’m serious about my role as a pastor, but I don’t take…
