Amazing Grace in Charleston

Jon Stewart began his June 18th edition of The Daily Show with an emotional, joke-free commentary about racism and gun violence in America following the shooting deaths of nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. “I’ve got nothing for you in terms of jokes and sounds, because of what happened in South Carolina,” Stewart said. “I honestly have nothing other than just sadness once again that we have to peer into the abyss of the depraved violence we do to each other and the nexus of a gaping racial wound that will not heal yet we pretend doesn’t exist.” A Gaping Wound When a nation’s comedian finds humor inappropriate, you know the events of the…

WANTING MORE OF GOD

I want MORE of God. I want MORE of God who is not created in my image. I want MORE of God who accepts people who are painfully aware they could be wrong in their beliefs. I want MORE of God who knows my infallibility and allows room for me to err on the side of mercy and grace. I want MORE of God who is a friend of sinners and the conscience of the self-righteous and died for both. (Isaiah 53:12; Matthew 23:25-28) I want MORE of God who allows the righteous to suffer and the unrighteous to prosper, in this life. (Romans 5:3; Psalm 73:3) I want MORE of God who designed marriage to be for life and…

JARED’S HOPE

Jared Hope was on a fast track to what most Canadians would call “The Canadian Dream.” His Junior hockey career was powered by a winning mix of skill and ambition. Originally from Edmonton, he'd been playing in Spokane, Washington since he was 16. Between 1995 and 1996, as scouts lined him up for a first round NHL draft pick, he had three consecutive concussions and was forced to walk away from a pro hockey career. "I remember a counselor telling me I was experiencing a mid-life crisis. She said the depression was normal." Jared didn't feel normal. Building on Ego Determined to build a new life, Jared moved back to Edmonton. He graduated college, went into sales and was making…

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MOSHE

When was the last time you had to pinch yourself so you wouldn’t miss the moment you were living? For me it was feeling the sea breeze on my face and the wooden deck of the boat beneath my feet as we silently glided across the surface of a sea called, “Galilee.” PINCH. Could this have been the very place that 2000 years ago, Jesus, awakened by his anxious disciples, spoke calm to a furious storm? Were the hills on the horizon the long ago home of the Gaderene who was possessed by a legion of demons? Might it have been at this spot that Jesus appeared, walking on the water on a moon lit night, and invited Peter to become…

Many Voices – One Clear Choice

How does God work in drawing people to a faith in Jesus Christ?  This is Dr. Ron Powell's story.  Ron is the Youth Ministry Institute Director at Vanguard College in Edmonton and is equipping pastors be a voice for their generation. He is an avid blogger at YouthMinistryUnleashed  It’s not just one influence that brings a soul to Christ. In my case, there were many different voices that led me to one clear choice. You may be surprised to see the variety voices God uses to save a life. My Parents My dad lost and found his Scottish Presbyterian faith in the front lines of Korea. When he returned to Montreal, he married Shirley Knowles a staunch Anglican. Together they…

THROUGH THE FOG

Guest post from Rev. Charity Mongrain, Children's Pastor at North Pointe Community Church. Not rain, not snow - just moisture. The air is thick with it – fog; as far as the eye can see. It hides the shore, the sea, all. The silence of this place, this quiet moment is interrupted by another blast of the foghorn, a warning to all…

SEEKING ALLAH, FINDING JESUS

"Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus" presents a gripping and deeply personal account of Nabeel Qureshi’s journey to faith in Jesus. Qureshi’s story of family, friends, and faith, intertwined with insights into Islam, helped me understand the Muslim world in new ways and see the powerful ways in which God is meeting seekers today. March 7, 2017 - "My family and I have received the news that I have advanced stomach cancer, and the clinical prognosis is quite grim. Nonetheless, we are going to pursue healing aggressively, both medical and miraculous, relying on God and the fact that He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. In the past few days my spirits have soared and sank…

THE IMAGE OF JESUS TODAY

“Ecce Homo” ("Behold the Man") was a prized Spanish fresco — for over a century - the pride of the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in Borja, near Zaragoza. The condition of the painting was gradually deteriorating. Can The Man Be Saved? A concerned, eighty year-old congregant was distraught over its worsening condition. She decided to take matters into her own hands and attempted to restore the painting. What was left looks like a child’s finger painting. Art historians are now discussing if the painting can be saved. The Image of Jesus The story reminds me of well intentioned academics who alter the image of Jesus in an attempt to fit a value system they feel will help people see Jesus…

A Personal Relationship with Jesus

North Pointe exists to see a personal relationship with Jesus grow in everyone; everyday. Having a personal relationship with Jesus is not a trite or trivialized idea  - its God's idea. Don't miss the profound in the familiar words of John 3:16 - "...God so loved the world..." That's a love for a world of people - a love that is personal. God wants a relationship with YOU. A healthy relationship is based on: 1. TRUST Trust is conditional. "I trust you because..." is a reasonable perspective. God is trustworthy because He is the loving Creator. He is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. He knew you before you were born. He numbers all of your days and the hairs on your…

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOD DOING?

Over the past 36 years of ministry I’ve been asked a question by anxious news watchers, inquisitive students and seekers of all sorts. The question is: "What in the world is God doing today?" If you want to know what God is doing in the world have a look at your local church. 5 Ways God Is At Work Through His Church 1. The local church is the center of God's attention and activity in every community. The Church universal is God's experiment in love and grace. When believers love unconditionally, the church works. When believers make anything else their modus operandi we fail. 2. The local church is the hope of the world. Its pragmatic to be a part…
