Why Falling Only Makes Us Stronger Uncategorized

Why Falling Only Makes Us Stronger

Overcoming falls and setbacks enroute to success is the stuff of Olympic champions. Coupling that with the influence of a mom on the journey is the stuff of life. Moms and success is why P & G produced their 2014 Olympic ad, "Thank You Mom." Its already had over 20 million views on YouTube. Each time I've watched the video I can't help but think of how moms have shaped champions through their everyday interactions with their children. In the moment, kids have no way of appreciating the way a mom can allow pain or even bring pain for their greater good. The message makes me think of how God has interacted with my life. (Skip to the video below…

The Secret to Genuine Happiness Uncategorized

The Secret to Genuine Happiness

Hugh Hewitt wrote his legacy book, "The Happiest Life," to bless his children and their children with wisdom for discovering genuine happiness. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hewitt’s anecdotes from his broad experience as a lawyer, teacher, broadcaster and journalist. His connections with the who’s who of Hollywood, pro sports, and politics provide rare insights for what creates genuine happiness. Hewitt’s premise: a happy life involves seven gifts and seven givers. Life's 7 Gifts: 1. Encouragement – Its what you say to a friend or stranger that would “redeem a hard day or make a good one ever better.” 2. Energy – “A player of any game at any time who doesn’t bring his or her energy with them is an…

SAY GOODBYE TO THE BLUES AND LIGHTEN UP Uncategorized

SAY GOODBYE TO THE BLUES AND LIGHTEN UP

The older we get it seems the less we laugh. On average kids laugh three hundred times a day and adults...five. Have you laughed today? Laughter is like medicine. Doctors call it "inner jogging." He who laughs, lasts. 8 Ways To See The Lighter Side Of Life And Lighten Up 1. Surround yourself with reminders to lighten up. My office is dominated by a serious Coca Cola collection. On my desk is a turtle made out of Coke caps from Burundi, a football-shaped coconut from Hawaii and a praying TY bear named “Hope” given to me by my Daddy/Daughter Ball dance partner, Robynn. 2. Take yourself less seriously. I’m serious about my role as a pastor, but I don’t take…

HOW TO KEEP YOUR EDGE IN THE DAILY GRIND Uncategorized

HOW TO KEEP YOUR EDGE IN THE DAILY GRIND

Life will dull your "edge" - that's why it's called "the daily grind." Activities that once felt like a "knife through butter" can feel like cutting steel with a piece of wood. You've lost your edge. How To Keep Your Edge There is an ancient proverb that says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." To keep your edge you need to be with people who have an edge. For almost a decade I've been a part of a small group of women and men who are committed to personal development. We meet every week. Our group is made up of corporate executives, business owners, service professionals, financial consultants, and entrepreneurs. Each of us have gone through career…

THE SECRET INGREDIENT THAT CHANGES THE WORLD Uncategorized

THE SECRET INGREDIENT THAT CHANGES THE WORLD

At one time I believed that money, education and certainly love, could change the world. Now don't get me wrong, love and money are certainly important, but without hope, even love and money aren't enough. Hope convinces you that tomorrow will be better than today. When you give a child hope, you can change the world. Orphans in Zimbabwe My wife, Jocelyn and I traveled to Harare, Zimbabwe in March, 2003 to see the “Village of Hope” - a fledgling response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. The Village was just a few months old - two buildings on a rural parcel of land. We met the first person being cared for at the Village of Hope. Her name was "Precious" -…

11 Reasons Why Down is The Way Up Uncategorized

11 Reasons Why Down is The Way Up

“Down” is a word usually reserved for losers and the bear market. “Down” is a word that colors whatever it touches… downfall, downcast, downhill, downhearted, down and out. Down, as the way up, is counter intuitive and counter cultural. Enter - Gilmore Junio. On February 11th, 2014 no one besides his family, coaches and teammates were familiar with his name. On February 12th, 2014 most Canadians knew who he was. Junio, a Canadian Olympic athlete, qualified for the finals in the Men’s 1000-metre speed skating event. He had trained and dreamed of this opportunity for over four years. He gave it up so a teammate, Denny Morrison, could get an opportunity to compete. Why? Because he believed it was in…

The Happiness Equation: Money + Generosity Uncategorized

The Happiness Equation: Money + Generosity

“Money can’t buy happiness. “ That’s the common proverb, but its not true. Money can buy happiness…you just need to know what to spend it on. Just ask P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadians. On September 16, 2015 Subban donated $10 million to the Montreal Children's Hospital - the biggest philanthropic commitment by a sports figure in Canadian history. He said, "It's not about the money; it's about leading by example and bringing a community together. In life I believe you are not defined by what you accomplish, but by what you do for others." 13 Insights To Creating A Life You Can Be Proud Of 1. The words “genius” and “generous” come from the Latin root “genere” meaning “to…

7 THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT FREEDOM FROM A PRISONER NAMED SAMSON Uncategorized

7 THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT FREEDOM FROM A PRISONER NAMED SAMSON

“A small bird flew overhead and landed atop one of the army trucks. It opened its beak and began to sing a song of springtime, its voice sweet, clear and free. Samson stared at the bird long enough to burn an image of it into his mind, a picture of freedom that he would hold onto.” A 1936 Olympic Boxer Samson: A Saviour Will Rise is based on true stories, woven together by Shawn Hoffman in a novel of historical fiction that is hard to put down and harder to forget. Samson Abrams, a Jewish prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp encounters men like Dr. Josef Mengele – “the Angel of Death,” Commandant Rudolph Hoss and a Polish Catholic priest,…

10 IRRESISTIBLE ASPECTS OF JERUSALEM Popular

10 IRRESISTIBLE ASPECTS OF JERUSALEM

In January 2014, I sat in Row B at IMAX for a one-of-a-kind, 3D immersion into parts of Jerusalem and the Holy Land that most tourists and pilgrims never see. I was hooked. Over the past three decades I've always declined invitations to lead a tour to Israel. Not that I don't revere "the Holy Land" but I never felt compelled to travel there. Now, Jerusalem had become irresistible. Within a week of viewing the film we booked a tour to Israel and Jordan with International Tours. We're going back again in March 2019 and you could join us. 10 Irresistible Things About Israel and Jerusalem 1. Jerusalem, not Toronto, is the center of the Universe. Jerusalem lies close to…
