“You have cancer.” What other words could bring a deeper chill on a hot summer day?

The Phone Call

My friend Cindy was in a comfortable cabin at a beautiful lake enjoying a family holiday. Her doctor’s phone number appeared on her cell phone screen.

“Why would my doctor be calling me?”

A deafening silence followed his word “cancer.” Unable to speak she listened to him say, over and over “I am so sorry. I am so sorry.”

“I didn’t think anyone could cry as much as I was during it all, buckets and buckets.

Horror and sorrow.

Your world comes to a complete stop.

You have no idea what is before you and the unknown is scary.”

I was amazingly calm through the entire ordeal and felt God wanted me to get through one minute at a time, one day at a time.

Never Alone

Cindy recalls, “I was constantly reminding myself of God’s goodness and faithfulness to me throughout my life and I knew I could trust Him and His love for me.

That’s really all you can do and he did give me strength for each day as things were evolving so quickly.

I never felt alone in this journey.

I actually still cry a little every day, as I thank God for his hand on my life.

Tears of joy.

He is a good God and he loves us so much in every detail of our lives.”

Cancer Is So Limited

Treating cancer can be long and painful. Many people do not survive.

Cancer seems so powerful.

However, cancer is actually so limited, but God isn’t.

Cancer cannot…

cripple love,

shatter hope,

corrode faith,

eat away peace,

destroy confidence,

kill friendship,

shut out memories,

silence courage,

invade the soul,

reduce eternal life,

quench the Spirit,

or lessen the power of the resurrection.

Resist The Power Of Despair

If cancer has invaded your body, refuse to let it touch your life. Your body can be severely afflicted, and you may have a great struggle. But cancer is not your life.

Cindy is just like you. She found a strength outside of herself that sustained her.

You don’t have to know how to pray and feel like you can hold it all together.

Lean heavy into God’s mercy.

“Help me, Jesus” is a powerful start in prayer. And if that is too long, “Jesus” is a prayer that says it all.

You don’t have to face cancer alone. Ask others to pray for you.

Cindy says, “He gave me strength for each day.”

Face one day at a time. God’s mercy for you will be fresh every morning.

Cancer can’t but God can.
