Grass, like everything that is great and important in this world, grows at night. In silence. Without anyone seeing it. Think about this the next time you mow your lawn or feel mowed down by life.

God’s Extravagance

Jose Descalzo, a brilliant author, inspired me to re-think what I know about God’s extravagance.

In Reasons For Hope, Descalzo observed, “Silence harmonizes perfectly with kindness and goodness, just as stupidity is always accompanied by noise and bright lights.

All the nonsense in the world will not be able to prevent the grass from growing at night.”

Think About It

Although grass needs energy from the sun to grow, it does not stop growing at night. Grass uses the energy it gathered from the sun during the day to make sugars and actually grows most just before dawn.

That’s not some kind of horticultural hocus pocus.

During the day, the grass is gathering and storing sunlight, so that once darkness hits, the grass can process that sunlight, converting the energy into much needed nutrients like carbon dioxide and water, which then becomes sugar. Plants never stop using the magic of photosynthesis in order to grow.

Grass, like so much of what is important in life, can have a growth spurt if it can survive till the dawn.

Flowers In The Field

On the surface of our planet are millions of flowers that no one will ever see. They will grow and die without having been “useful.”

They will have simply lived and been beautiful.

That’s God’s extravagance.

Silently, Simply, Beautifully

In the darkness of the world, millions of souls are growing during the night, silent and humble, striving and intense.

They…

…are not famous but they are alive.

…do not appear in the newspapers, but it is they who keep the world going.

…do not shout – they love.

Dawn Will Come

Pain can trap you but not poison you.

Injustice can assault you but not destroy you.

Frivolity can spit at you but not drown you.

Only indulged discouragement can can lead you into disillusionment and bring you down.

Grass, grace and hope grow at night.

The perspective of God’s extravagance helps me make sense of the nonsense in life. I hope this post is encouraging to you. Please leave a comment below. Thank you.

This is very encouraging. I just mowed my grass last night. I am reading this post at 3:30 am. I am often awake in the middle of the night. Solutions to issues I am facing often come to me during this time. Even though I would like to be able to sleep, I do enjoy the peace, quiet and calm. This is a perfect time to pray. I have hope in the dawn and also look forward to watching the sunrise. The
birds start singing. They are very joyful. It’s the promise of a new day waiting to begin.

Another good one to ponder on…the grass still grows in the night.
Thank You for the words of encouragement

Always, Teresa. You’ve been through a lot of tough times. They don’t get easier. God is faithful.
