CHOOSE MERCY – 2018

No mercy.

Those were the code words for a no holds barred, anything is permissible, cutthroat kind of clash.

Battling to the end.

Only one walks away.

Deadly.

My Thai opponent and I always drew a crowd.

Good thing the battleground was simply a competitive game of Ping Pong.

The Air We Breathe

Ironically, our “no mercy” competitions occurred when Prayoon and I were classmates in Bible College learning about the mercy God.

And I learned so much more after Bible College – in the school of hard knocks – about God’s mercy.

Mercy is in the air we breathe.

Every morning brings new mercy.

What Mercy Is

Mercy is love with two hands attached.

These are hands that are there to catch you when you fall, hands that are there to help you up when you are already down.

Hands that are not pointing a finger of accusation, but helping dry the tears.

These are hands that are holding a plan to rebuild your life, hands that are holding a Bible to give meaning to it all.

These are hands holding a plate of food when you’re hungry or hands offering a coat when you are too cold to think.

That my friend is mercy.

Almighty God’s Is Merciful

God’s mercy means the ability to get right inside the other person’s skin until we can see things with their eyes, think things with their mind, and feel things with their feelings.

God does not insulate Himself from the world’s misery.

God became one of us. Jesus is God with flesh on.

God literally got inside our skin.

He suffered like us.

Rejected. Marginalized. Ostracized. Misunderstood. Misrepresented. Abused. Alienated. Unappreciated. Slandered. Tortured. Crucified.

You name it and Jesus suffered it.

Fully Human In Every Way

He had to be made like us, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful high priest in service to God. Hebrews 2:17 (New International Version)

“Because God’s children are human beings–made of flesh and blood–the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.” Hebrews 2:14 (New Living Translation)

Every time you choose mercy, you act like Jesus. And that’s good.
