2020 marks the first summer in three decades that football is not on the calendar for our family.
Suspension
High school and post-secondary sports, including football, are suspended because of Covid. Cory was 8 and Jean Marc was 6 when they started to play for the Bucs in St Albert Minor Football Association.
Football is far more than just a sport. Football shaped the life experiences of our family for 30 years. Cory and Jean Marc traveled to 7 of the 10 provinces, as well as California, in planes, busses, ferries and cars to compete with their teams. They formed lifetime friendships, were mentored by some of the finest leaders we know, practiced rigorous discipline, learned to play on a team, and faced devastating loss and thrilling comeback victories. The Football family is wide and inclusive.
More Than Just a Sport
Cory and JM mastered the dynamics of the game, fair and competitive play and what it means to sacrifice for the team. They’ve been awarded trophies in acknowledgment of stand-out performances, however, what they love the most are the trophies awarded for winning a championship as a team.
They earned scholarships which paid for their post-secondary education, became elite level athletes, played on All-Star teams, and were identified as All-Canadians.
Following their playing days they coached younger players. Perhaps one day, their children will strap on the pads, cleats and a helmet, step onto the gridiron and fall in love with Football.
We’ll Be Back
Cory and JM are the men they are today in due part to Football. And Covid can’t take that away.
To all the Bucs, Avengers, 49’ers, Skyhawks, Wildcats, Golden Bears, Huskies, Tartans and Chargers alumni, we’ll be back.
Hope grows here. You’ll find stories that inspire, build faith, and offer lasting purpose.
