When political leaders talk about unity, love, and caring, people get broken open in the best way.
Texas Goes Blue
The US mid-terms produced hoped for results across the nation and championed character over billionaires’ resources.
A connection in Texas shared this, following the election results in his state on November 3rd.
- My kids go to Texas Public Schools that will be prioritized, not punished
- The LGBTQ+ folks, immigrants, and asylum seekers who are a part of our church will stop being demonized
- Religious freedom will return to its rightful place of allowing citizens to practice whatever religion they choose, not pushing a Christian Nationalist agenda on all Americans despite their religious beliefs
- And so much more
“As I think about it more, I’m realizing that the tears really started to flow while I listened to Talarico and Hinojosa’s victory speeches. It wasn’t just a win that gave me hope for my state, but the way the winners spoke to and of every Texan they will serve. I am so used to vitriolic and even violent rhetoric from our politicians that hearing our Senator-elect and Governor-elect talk about unity, love, and caring for all people regardless of their political party broke me wide open in the best way.” Zach Lambert
Zach quoted the new Governor of Texas and a newly elected Senator from Texas.
GINA HINOJOSA (Governor elect)
“Tonight, I make a solemn promise to every single Texan. Whether you voted for me or Governor Abbott, or felt so betrayed by broken politics that you did not vote at all. Whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican, or neither. No matter where you live. No matter what your expectations of me are… (or) how accustomed you’ve become to corruption and incompetence. To experiencing government as something that happens to you, not with you or for you, or by you. Hear what Texas said today, loud and clear: Your government belongs to you. And as your governor, I will never forget it.”
JAMES TALARICO (Senator elect)
“I follow a barefoot rabbi who gave us two commandments, ‘love God and love neighbor.’ Because there is no love of God without love of neighbor. Every single person bears the image of the sacred. Every single person is holy. Not just my neighbor who looks like me. Not just my neighbor who prays like me… not just my neighbor who votes like me. I am called to love all of my neighbors the way I love myself.”
There is something here that goes beyond a political acceptance speech.
There are far too many American politicians invoking the name of Jesus while promoting policies and rhetoric that are completely contrary to his teachings. Some Canadian politicians who are evangelical Christians must have seen that behaviour work in the US and thought to copy it. That’s not going to accurately represent Jesus or get them elected.
Reading elected leaders communicate about serving people who didn’t vote for them and recognizing the sacred worth of every human being is deeply moving.
May it be so in Canada and in our province, Alberta.
