My country lane held a wintry stillness today. The only sounds were evergreen trees shedding the new fallen snow from their branches with a soft swoosh or the occasional call of the chickadee. A good day to work on memorizing.
Words, Calves and Life
This is not my usual stomping grounds at this time of year. But today I find myself happily walking along this lane. Usually this is a regular walk in a different season.
Many times I have walked along this lane memorizing scripture. My voice has carried into the field with the cows watching and listening to me, their brown eyes following me as I have quoted aloud from James and Philippians. Lucky cows.
Only the calves seem to react often getting up to come to the fence or leave their mother’s side.
Today I’m working on 1st John chapter one. And there are no cows or curious calves anywhere to be found. Even the birds have flown. There are deer tracks and rabbit tracks but I cannot see their makers. Perhaps hidden eyes follow me.
Memorizing Tips
Where do I begin with memorizing?
First I choose a translation. I prefer the New International Version.
I begin by writing out the Scriptures on a page or index cards, post-it notes or flashcards.
To make it easy on myself I put my pages in a sleeve protector so that I can carry them around with me rain or shine. Then I can reference them whether on a walk in a car or wherever.
Memorization is a matter for me of going over and over the verses.
Struggling with a verse? I write the first letter of each word in the verse to give me a reference.
Setting a flexible timeline has always been needed because sometimes I just lose focus.
Impact
Enjoy the discipline of memorization. The impact of the Word of God is never lost on anyone who commits it to memory.
What is one Bible verse or passage you have committed to memory? Please share it at the bottom of this post. Thank you.
Hope grows here. You’ll find stories that inspire, build faith, and offer lasting purpose.

Good for you Jocelyn. That is a beautiful setting for memorizing. As I mentioned to you I was working on Proverbs 4 during the Covid seclusion. It has been a real joy!
