Imagine what you could do with one billion dollars.
Opportunity
And US dollars at that.
Steven Page and Ed Robertson mused about what they could buy if they had “a million dollars.” Their song became an icon of Canadian culture. What would buy with a million or even a billion dollars?
On December 13, 2024 the leaders who make decisions in Russia saw $1 billion as an opportunity to wreak havoc on Ukrainian civilians. A billion bucks will get you 93 missiles, including cruise missiles, and almost 200 drones.
Ukrainian defences shot down 81 of the missiles.
The missiles that got through targeted transport networks and key energy facilities.
Ukraine’s biggest private energy company, DTEK, said the attack “seriously damaged” its thermal power plants.
That means rolling blackouts, and limited heat in the winter months in Ukraine.
How many Canadian students would appreciate wearing winter clothes to indoor classes?
Russia has repeatedly attempted to cripple Ukraine’s electricity system to break the will of civilians left in the dark with no running water or heating.
From September 28, 2022, to September 1, 2024, Russia fired off billions of dollars in a total of 11,466 missiles.
7C
Every day, Ukraine is teaching the world lessons on values, courage, and technology. Not by choice, but for survival, always the most demanding classroom. The debt we owe them is staggering and they must be whole and free.
When I was in Eastern Ukraine in December 2023, our team brought food to seniors living in apts a few kms from the frontlines. Their power was cut off by the Russians. The daytime temperature inside their apt was 7C. They were joking with us that it was feeling warm that day.
Generosity
How far would $1 billion go in aid? In April 2024, the US invested $950 million to purchase, ship and distribute wheat, rice, sorghum, lentils, chickpeas, dry peas, vegetable oil, cornmeal, navy beans, pinto beans and kidney beans to 18 countries.
I know how challenging it was to raise $56,723. Those funds were given generously in love.
In Ukraine, $10 Canadian invested in humanitarian support has the effect of $100 Canadian. The pictures below show a soup and sandwich lunch for over 30 seniors.
