When I first held Heather Enright’s book in my hands I knew I was touching a rare treasure. Grace of Many Colors isn’t your typical coloring book. Before even one crayon touches a page of this book it gives off a colorful hue of hope.
My friend, Colleen passed the book on to me. She heard Heather’s inspiring story about creating her book. “It was scary, thrilling, surreal and inspiring to produce this book. It was a labor of love to redeem back everything that cancer had stolen from me. I’m using it to help anyone battling cancer – for every book purchased I’ll give one away to a cancer patient.”
At first, Colleen couldn’t think of any friends with cancer, but then she remembered “Pastor Bob’s Katelyn” – a twelve year old facing leukemia. She bought a copy.
A Child’s Ambition
Heather Enright’s Scripture coloring book began as a dream thirty-eight years ago. Heather was seven when she began filling sketch books with doodles and writing stories in her head. She knew then that one day she would become an author and an illustrator.
Two years later her father was diagnosed with cancer.
Heather was deemed too young to visit him in the hospital where he recovered from successful removal of the cancer so she began creating daily pages of illustrations with poems that she would send to him.
Comfort Through Creativity
Ten years later his cancer returned. During the operation to remove the cancer, the surgeon discovered a previously undetected cancer in the liver. It was inoperable. Her dad was given less than six months to live.
Heather, now seventeen, began filling his hospital room with her new creations, this time illustrating Bible verses. When her father passed away she stored her collection in a three-ring binder.
Finally, in 2016 she was ready to publish Grace of Many Colors. She dedicated it to “The One who paints promises in the stormiest of skies.”
Heather says,
“This book of Scripture illustrations is the full circle of hand-drawn pictures from daughter to father. It’s the fruition of the seeds planted from tiny, uncertain offerings in my effort to give back to the Dad who had given me so much. The book is a baby step to tell the story of the Heavenly Father who gave his all to make us his children. He is the Father who paints his promises in the stormiest of skies and pours out grace upon grace.”
Our God is crazy-big and much more limitless than the boxes we create that constrain him.
I’m passing on Colleen’s gift copy to Katelyn at the Stollery Children’s Hospital along with prayers and expectation of her miracle from the One who “pours out grace upon grace.”
