Brene Brown is the author of five #1 New York Times bestsellers including ones I've read: Daring Greatly, and Rising Strong. Their essential themes are the same. The path to a meaningful, loving life comes through a willingness to be vulnerable and a rejection of the socially produced shame that convinces us we, or our vulnerabilities, are not worthy of love. It was so intense that I was embarrassed I could feel so deeply about pets - Tammy...Sprite...Silver. They were Goldens and like family. Is that kind of grieving normal? Is it healthy? Am I saying that pets are on par with people? (more…)

TATTOO: WHEN ART IMITATES LIFE

Starbucks coffeehouses became my new meeting places when I transitioned out of North Pointe's office space. I like the lattes but I love the unexpected connections with people. Like the one I had on Friday. Waiting in line to pick up my flat white I couldn't help but notice the tattoos of a woman seated to my right. It's not polite to stare but I was tempted. Not In My Plans But… Why is there always a “but?” After a routine mammogram, my doctor diagnosed breast cancer. That was not on my list of summer activities. Oh well, I would have the mastectomy, rest for a few days, do my university courses, and still go on holidays.…
