A woman was having terrible difficulty getting through the death of her husband. She said to her physician, “Please give me a prescription to help me with my sadness. Every day I go to the cemetery and I put flowers on my husband’s grave, but it doesn’t help. It simply drives me deeper into grief. Please give me a prescription to ease my pain.”

Flowers

The physician said, “Before I give you a prescription, let me give you a suggestion.

Instead of placing those flowers on your husband’s grave, why don’t you bring them to the hospital? I have many patients in the hospital who nobody ever visits and if you would visit them and bring them some encouragement in those flowers, it may be that you would bring a little joy into their lives.”

Even though she was resistant, she decided to do it and found that this was the turning point for her own healing.

Doing good, is good for your soul – “well being” and “well doing” are intrinsically linked.

15 Reasons Doing Good is Good For You

1. When you do something kind for someone else, you feel good. On a spiritual level, that’s because it is the right thing to do. You’re tapping into something deep and profound inside you that says, “This is who I am.”

2. When you are kind it inspires others to be kind, and that creates a ripple effect of goodness.

3. In the classic tale, “A Christmas Carol,” Ebenezer Scrooge is the epitome of selfishness, the quintessential mean-spirited, miserly, narcissistic old man. Yet Scrooge discovers the joy of good deeds and experiences elation.

4. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

5. “Goodness is the only investment that never fails.” Henry David Thoreau

6. “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” Desmond Tutu

7. “How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.” William Shakespeare

8. “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.” John Wesley

9. “All it takes for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edmond Burke

10. “Do not be weary in doing good…as we have opportunity let us do good to all people.” Galatians 6:9,10

11. “…it is better…to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins…” 1 Peter 3:17, 18

12. “So then, those who suffer…should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.” 1 Peter 4:19

13. “The Paradoxical Commandments”

* People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

* If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

* If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

* The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

* People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

14. “He’s not safe, but he’s good (referring to Aslan, the Lion, in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe)” C.S. Lewis

15. God is good all the time and all the time God is good.

I like the Galatians quote: “Do not be weary in doing good….” This quote supports the theory that doing good is hard work….we have to be prepared to roll up our sleeves….

Millionaires get tired of money…children get tired of toys…volunteers get tired of serving…the best of life has a way of becoming wearisome. Time is the greatest enemy of enthusiasm. I am glad for all of your service, Randy.

In our house, we have a little saying, “Do2Be”. When we don’t FEEL like doing something, we simply just start doing it, and find ourselves enjoying it. I think this matches well with, “Do it anyway”.
On a side note, I think you really need to write a book Pastor Bob. 🙂

I love your family sayings. Reminders like “Do2Be” last a lifetime. Thanks for the encouragement, Adena!
