When Mom Moved To Alberta

May 19th, 2022, Bob and I were happily celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary. We were flying back to St Albert from a ministry conference in Winnipeg. While waiting to board our plane my phone dinged. There was a message informing me that my 91-year-old Mom was in hospital in emergency with a broken neck.

Recovery

She had a freak accident from an unexpected fall. Mom was six provinces away in Nova Scotia. Two days later I flew home to be with her and stayed until the end of July, 2022.

My Dad had passed away in February of 2021 and Mom didn’t want to spend another winter in rural Nova Scotia by herself. While I was home Mom and I went through the house decluttering and getting rid of things. I felt like I was dismantling her and Dad’s life together as I took things to Good Will or just threw them out.

So, we put the family home up for sale and proceeded to make plans for her next.

The Next

In September she called to let me know the house sold. Yay!  Then she said she was coming to Alberta. Bob and I were sitting at the kitchen table. I had to ask, “Mom are you coming for Christmas or for good?” For good. There seemed to be an eternity of silence before my response. Yay! For good it was!

On Friday October 21, 2022 she boarded a plane by herself in Halifax, Nova Scotia and flew to Edmonton with one suitcase and a lifetime of memories. We were in Saskatoon with family on what may have been our last trip alone for the foreseeable future. On the 24th Mom moved in and on the 25^th, the rest of her belongings arrived in a U-haul.
