Most normal repairs of broken things hide themselves, like nicely sealed super glue fixes. The usual intent is simply to make something “as good as new.” Yet the art of Kintsugi reinforces a profound belief that the repair can make things better than new.

Better than new.

Soak that in for a moment.

Broken Things

An ancient practice called Kintsugi – meaning “to patch with gold” – is an age-old custom of repairing cracked pottery with real gold.

Through turning what is broken into beautiful, cherished pieces, by sealing the cracks and crevices with lines of fine gold. Instead of hiding the flaws, Kintsugi artists highlight them, creating a whole new design and bringing unique beauty to the original piece and greatly increasing the value of the piece..

The pottery actually becomes more beautiful and valuable in the restoration process because, though it was once broken, it not only has history, but a new story.

Breakthrough

There are lies out there that swirl around and whisper to your deepest soul when you’ve lost your grip, and things come crashing down.

You feel the need to hide the scars. Brokenness has rendered you useless in life. You feel beyond repair this time.

You feel tossed aside.

Forgotten.

Shamed.

Rejected.

As you sit on a shelf.

Yet God breaks through all that mess. You are never beyond healing.

Don’t be ashamed of your scars, of the deep crevices that line your soul, or the broken places of your life. They have an amazing story to tell.

New Beauty

Here’s the truth – just because you’ve been broken doesn’t mean that you should be thrown away.

Just because you’ve been broken doesn’t mean that you are unusable, set up on a shelf.

Just because you’ve been broken doesn’t mean that you are forgotten.

Brokenness has the power, unlike anything else, to bring forth new beauty, strength, and inspiration to others. Because it’s often in those moments that you’ve tasted deep suffering, that you noticed, you were made for more.

There’s more.

There’s purpose.

Hurts, Habits, Hang-Ups

Each of our lives is caught up in hurts that haunt our hearts, hang-ups that cause us pain and habits that mess up our lives.

We live in a broken world. We’ve been hurt by others, and hurt ourselves and we have hurt others. Its clear to see that, “all have sinned.”

Jesus, who was without sin, came to be broken so that we might be healed. On the night before He died, Jesus broke the bread and said, “This is my body, which is broken for you.” Jesus died so you could live, better than new.

God can take what has been broken and remake it into something better.

Better than new.

I loved this blog Pastor Bob. It’s so true…that in brokenness…it brings new perspective into one’s life. From where I see it…people who have been hurt by others, are even more empathetic & kind to others, because they know what it is like to be hurt. Treat people how you would like to be treated. The golden rule. The Phoenix is known to rise from the ashes. That can also be the result from brokenness. I like that imagery. It is strong & beautiful. I love reading your blog every week & look forward to it. It is the highlight of my morning…in my quiet time. Have a great day! You’re the best! ❤️
