He is one of the greatest investors of our time. Warren Buffet says success can be summed up in one word. His insight has nothing to do with markets or investing.

Buffet is known as the Sage of Omaha for good reason. He is a master at delivering insight. The man is 94 years old and worth billions. And perhaps his most underrated insight has everything to do with the human heart.

One Word

In his biography, The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life, Buffett says,

“Basically, when you get to my age, you’ll really measure your success in life by how many of the people you want to have love you actually do love you.”

“That’s the ultimate test of how you have lived your life. The only way to get love is to be lovable. The more you give love away, the more you get.”

The Ultimate Test of Success

Buffett’s ultimate test of success? Do people who matter to you feel seen, valued, and loved by you? Have you made enough of a positive impact for them to love you back?

The best leaders don’t look out for No. 1. They look out for others. They serve, empower, coach, mentor, and help others grow.

In the end, the legacy we leave isn’t built on how well we took care of ourselves. Legacy is built on how well we took care of each other.

What you do for yourself dies with you. What you do for others lives forever.

Success is about being remembered for how you made people feel, and for the love you gave away.
