FUEL FOR GOLD

Tamara Oudenaarden is a retired Canadian speed skater and was a member of the Winter Olympic Team in 2010. Tamara is also a believer and a friend. I asked her to talk about one of the least observable but vitally important parts of Olympic training and how she applies that to faith. Fuel For Gold “Training is a major aspect of sport but something that people look past is the recovery which is an essential part of an athlete’s world. Fueling your body with the right things at the right time, or jumping into cold bath’s or pulling on your recovery tights are so important if you want to keep your performance level up day after day. Its essential to…

Saviour of Union

One million people showed up at his funeral. For 19th century New York, that was a lot of people. If its true that the number of people at your funeral is indicative of the breadth of influence you have, Ulysses S. Grant was a man of note. Grant played a significant role in the history of the United States. A General, a President and “the Saviour of the Union” – weighty responsibilities for one man to shoulder. Mitchell Yockelson, author of, “Grant: Saviour of the Union,” wrote, “He carried himself as though he hadn’t a care in the world, and this is a testament to an inner strength that helped him persevere during rough periods throughout his life.” History, for…

THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HOLY

What comes into your mind when you think about God? What's the first word? What's the first feeling? One of my favorite resources for growing faith in God is written by A. W. Tozer - The Knowledge of the Holy. Are you are trying to increase your knowledge of God? Consider the following: 4 Insights About Your Idea Of God 1. "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us."  What do you think of - and how do you feel - when you think about God? 2. "Man’s spiritual history will positively demonstrate that no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God. Worship is as pure or base…

SCIENCE IS A WAY OF ADMIRING GOD

For thousands of years the curious and the romantic have studied the night sky and wondered if anything else is out there. Four centuries ago Galileo Galilie answered the question of the ages. He trained a telescope on the heavens and saw objects that no other person had ever seen: hundreds of stars, mountains on the Moon, satellites of Jupiter. Since then we've found planets around other stars, one hundred billion stars in our galaxy, and hundreds of billions of galaxies beyond our own. The 4% Universe According to physicists most of the Universe is still to be discovered. In 2010, Richard Panek, a journalist not a physicist, summed up what he gleaned from physicists by saying, “only 4 percent…

A Day in Kristen’s Life

One snapshot of a day in Kristen Fersovitch's life - June 22, 2012. When I read her posts or talked to her, my prayer was, "Lord make her body as healthy as her spirit." Insight into what Kristen needed us to pray for. You probably know someone like Kristen who is going through a battle. You are supporting them and praying for them. You can find inspiration in the book "Ornament" - a legacy of Kristen's faith, joy and hope. Purchase it here.

It Takes a Team

The last page of Sports Illustrated is the first page I always turn to. Often there is "a human interest" story. The June 4th issue had one such story about a girl named Jaclyn. At the age of 9 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Now at the age of 17, she credits her survival to the Women's lacrose team at Northwestern University who became like big sisters to her during her treatments. Their affect on her was so profound that Jaclyn started her own foundation to connect elite sports teams with children suffering from brain tumors. And...Northwestern was so inspired by Jacyln's courage they went out and won 5 National Championships in a row, dedicating each season to…

Tomorrow is Secure

Cindy Glubish leads worship at North Pointe, among other ministry roles.   She will be hosting a special night of worship at NP on June 3rd at 6PM.  Her words of hope are..."I had a dream last night that I was floating in the clouds. Each cloud was called something different: peace, love, hope, joy etc. When I found the hope cloud, I laid down and slept. So when asked what hope means to me, I’d have to say it’s just that, a good night’s sleep. No tossing and turning with anxiety or stress or fear - it’s being able to lay your head down each night without your thoughts in turmoil, or your heart beating a mile a minute,…

Holding on to Hope

"Holding Onto Hope" records the reflections of Nancy Guthrie, a mother whose daughter, Hope, passed away from Zellweger Syndrome in June 1999. Hope lived for 199 days. Nancy gave birth to Gabriel in July 2001 and he too was diagnosed with Zellweger's and passed away 6 months later. I echo Joni Eareckson Tada's view of the book - "If you are stymied about God's goodness amidst life's heartaches, then this book is for you." Nancy's book records her experiences contextualized around the experiences of Job. She subtitled her book, "A pathway of suffering to the heart of God." She writes it to all who "feel their world is falling apart...hurt, and helpless and hopeless in the midst of loss." After…

Hope

Hope expects God to be good. It’s an attitude that says and believes, “Something good is going to happen today!” Psalm 27:13 - "I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living." (NASB) Be a good finder - see God at work in your life, today.
